The term Cult Classic gets thrown around a little too much these days. But what makes a cult classic so special or an even better question would be, what the hell does the term cult classic even mean?
The term Cult classic is defined as: “A popular piece of work, which has gained a large following. This following has most likely been around for at least a few years, except for cases of an ‘instant cult classic,’ in which a movie or piece of work gains instant fame which remains for decades to come.”
Now that we all get the general gist of what a cult classic is, I can now persuade you that at this very moment there is a game at your local Best Buy or GameStop that fits the definition above, that game is a PlayStation exclusive “Beyond: Two Souls”.
Beyond: Two Souls is the story of Jodie Holmes played by actress Ellen Page. Her story will take the player through important and key moments of her life, starting from the age of 8 and continuing to the age of 25. Jodie has an entity or more commonly known as a “ghost” named Aiden that is attached to her. Throughout the game the player will be thrusted into sections of Jodie’s life, some sections are as ordinary as your everyday life and other sections are as action packed as most Call of Duty games you see today.
So now we know a little about the game, lets go into what makes Beyond: Two Souls so special. There is one factor in particular that makes this game so unique and that is when the gameplay it-self collides with the story of Two Souls. There is a perfect mesh that happens in the game where you the player have the opportunity to play apart of the story, with films the viewer can only watch the narrative play out. With Two Souls the player will be able to interact with the characters and actually choose the fate of our protagonist. During sections of the game the player will be prompted to make split second decisions that will ultimately effect the outcome of the story, good or bad. This component of Two Souls makes for some interesting story changes and will have the player sweating his or hers next big decision.
October 8th 2013, Beyond: Two Souls is released to some rather peculiar review scores. IGN’s Lucy O’brien gave the game a 6/10, videogamer.com gave beyond an abysmal score of 4/10 and lastly GameSpot raved about Two Souls giving the game a 9/10. So what does this mean for the gamers? Personally when scores range from bad to amazing, this situation turns into a more tantalizing treat for the gamer. This will give you the player the opportunity to play this game and see for yourself if Beyond: Two Souls is for you or not.
So what will make Beyond: Two Souls an instant cult classic? I feel Beyond: Two Souls will be extremely polarizing to the general public due to the fact that this game is just so different from any other experience that is out right now. Of course you can play a first-person shooter, there are dozens of those. But when it’s all said and done do you wanna just play a game or do you wanna be apart of a journey? Jodie’s jouney…………….
With next-gen consoles on the horizon we have all become a little eager to play some new games. Some of the games we are all looking forward to are Killzone: Shadowfall, Dead Rising 3, Drive Club and the highly anticipated Titanfall. But I’m here to tell you about one game in particular that should be on your radar. The game I’m referring to is Infamous Second Son and here are 5 reasons why this third installment in the Infamous franchise should blow your mind!
1. Those Next-Gen Graphics look amazing!
From E3 to Gamescom there has been one constant with Infamous Second Son and that is that the game truly looks like a Next-Gen experience. Sucker Punch studios has come out swinging with their first PS4 title and have integrated a Mo-Cap studio into their game development to really capture the realism of Infamous Second Son.
2. Voice Actor Troy Baker
Having an enjoyable gameplay experience in games is super important. But if you are trying to convey a compelling story, having the right voice actor is essential. Delsin Rowe, the protagonist in Infamous Second Son, will be voiced by experienced voice actor Troy Baker. Some notable games that Troy has worked on in just this past year are BioShock Infinite, Batman Arkham Origins and potential game of the year candidate The Last Of Us. Troy Baker is arguably the best in the industry at the moment, and it makes it that much more exciting to see his performance in Infamous Second Son.
3. The use of the Dual-Shock 4
Change scares us all and especially when it involves our video games. But sometimes change is what we need to make us experience new things. Sucker Punch’s studio director Nate Fox said early this week on Podcast Beyond! that the Dual-Shock 4 has made some vast improvements from the triggers to the introduction to the touch pad. He also made many comparisons that the touch pad on the new Dual-Shock 4 will feel very similar to the common smart phones we use today.
4. A Seattle setting
The original Infamous took place in Empire City and Infamous 2 took place in New Marais- both were pho-cities depicting New York and New Orleans. In the third installment, Second Son will take place in Seattle which is fitting because Sucker Punch’s headquarters is also in Seattle, Washington. Seattle is full of great landscapes from the Space Needle to the Jimmy Hendrix Museum. So one of the most tantalizing aspects of Infamous Second Son is how Delsin will make his way through the rainy city. Will Delsin take the parkour route like Cole or will he rely heavily on his smoke powers to get around Seattle’s rugged terrain?
5. Delsin speaks to a younger generation
Delsin isn’t your classic or even conventional video game character. From what we know about Delsin Rowe he is anything but conventional. He embraces his new powers, and from the trailers we have seen, it looks as if he is having a kick-ass time being a superhero. From the red beanie to the jean jacket, Deslin definitely has a punk-rock look that may connect to a younger generation of fans in a good way. Every Infamous game plays with the idea of having a karmic destiny and gives the player the option to either play as a villain or a hero. There have been rumors and speculation if the tattoos on Delsin arms will have something to do with your karma, similar to the tattoos in Farcry 3. Whatever the case may be, Sucker Punch is great at making us care about characters, so there is no doubt Delsin will evoke the same fan base as Cole did.
Infamous Second Son has not been given a release date yet, but the studio and Sony have gone on record as saying Second Son will be ready in February of 2014. The PS4 will be launching in the U.S on November 15th of this year, so we will have to wait to get our hands on Infamous Second Son, but from the looks of things it will be worth the wait.
“The Vita doesn’t have any games………”
At this point that statement is complete rubbish. The PlayStation Vita has all sorts of games, ranging from Triple-A titles such as Unit 13 and Assassins Creed Liberation. The Vita also has a large variety of smaller titles such as Guacamelee and the recently added Limbo. The Vita has games for the hardcore gamer and the casual gamer as well.
The main reason I decided to write this article was to tell the person on the fence about purchasing a Vita a little secret, you only need to buy one game for the Vita and that game is Uncharted Golden Abyss. This game is not only the best game on Vita, it is the reason all Vita owners or potential buyers should be excited about the future. Golden Abyss gives you a console experience on a handheld unlike any other device. You are literally playing an Uncharted game on a 5″ OLED screen that in my personal opinion is better than the original Uncharted on PlayStation 3. The reason all Vita owners should be excited is because Golden Abyss is just the tip of the Iceberg. There is no telling what we will see when the PS4 launches in the fall of 2013, Infamous anyone…..?
Uncharted Golden Abyss was created by Bend Studios and not by the original creators Naughty Dog. Which isn’t a slight against Bend in any way, these guys actually did some amazing things in Golden Abyss that I think Naughty Dog will adopt in the highly anticipated Uncharted 4. Such things include the backpack that Nathan Drake wears throughout the game and the introduction of charcoal rubbings. Though the charcoal rubbings at times began to get a tad annoying, I felt they allowed the player to be more immersed in the story and actually feel a little more like an explorer. We all know that Uncharted 4 will be on PS4, so I feel Naughty Dog will take advantage of the touch functionality in the new Dual-Shock 4 and continue the charcoal rubbings from Golden Abyss. As for the backpack that Sony Bend added, I keep coming back to how ingenious the backpack was used to store weapons in The Last Of Us, another gem from Naughty Dog.
In the end Uncharted Golden Abyss isn’t just a Vita game, it is the Vita game that you need to play. It plays like the other Uncharted’s and at times does things a little better in my personal opinion. This game has set a great cadence for things to come with Sony’s little handheld and frankly I’m quite excited as you should be too.
Remember that Wolverine Origins movie that came out in 2009 and was complete trash.? Well not much has changed with this new installment of “The Wolverine”. This film takes place after the events of “X-Men Last Stand” which came out in 2006…… So unless you have a killer memory you better brush up on your X-Men homework.
The first act of The Wolverine was very entertaining and at times showed real promise. But fast forward to the middle of the film and the one emotion I felt was straight boredom and anger cause the little kid sitting next to me was chomping his popcorn so loud. The film hit that one-hour mark and just completely fell apart all over itself. The second act is so bizarre and pointless, you start to wonder if you’re watching the same movie. I promise this isn’t a spoiler, but seriously Wolverine gets his ass kicked the entire film. So then this begs the question, why in the hell am I watching a movie called “The Wolverine” when he is getting his ass kicked the entire film? The other characters in the film are completely forgettable, which is good for Hugh Jackman, because he is actually really good throughout the film.
If you’re still following along, I think its obvious that I didn’t really love this film. If you were on the fence about this movie, then maybe wait until it comes to Redbox. But in respect to all the comic/superhero fans go see it and tell me what you think.
Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane and last but not least….Henry Cavill? Wait…….. Who?
Man of Steel will be releasing worldwide in under a week. The film will be a complete re-boot and an overall origin story of Superman. Clark Kent or as we all call him Superman has become one of the most popular comic book hero’s that there is today. So why is it that Man of Steel, a movie that is being produced by Christopher Nolan(Dark Knight) and directed by Zack Snyder(300) gives me not one bit of excitement? Well in this article I’m going to give you a couple reasons for why I’m afraid the world isn’t ready for another Superman movie.
The number one reason and the reason you should be concerned as well, is the casting of Superman himself being played by British actor Henry Cavill. Henry Cavill has starred in such blockbuster hits as Immortals, The Cold Light Of Day and Blood Creek. If that is sarcasm you hear then you are correct because all of these films have a Metacritic score that is below a 50. I personally feel the reason Christopher Nolan had so much success with the Batman franchise was finding the right Batman. Christian Bale had established himself as a solid actor in Hollywood before ever becoming the caped crusader. Bale had starred in such films as American Psycho, The Machinist and Reign of Fire. All of these films were considered successful in some way. American Psycho didn’t smash it out of the ballpark when it first released but would go on to be a cult classic. Cavill doesn’t have to knock it out of the park like I stated above, but he needs to make sure that his performance isn’t forgettable.
The second reason that I find myself a little weary about Man Of Steel is the extremely large cast of actors that have been thrown in this film. There is no secret that this movie has a great cast, ranging from Kevin Costner to the lovely Amy Adams. But why? I was under the impression that the Superman logo should sell itself without having to pull in large Hollywood names. I feel by having so many mainstream actors, the producers have already decided that Mr. Cavill may not be able to carry this movie by himself and may need a helping hand to make this movie a success.
In conclusion, there are so many reasons that I should be excited for Man Of Steel from the soundtrack composed by Hans Zimmer, to the producing talents of Christopher Nolan. But when I get right down to it I’m just not that excited. I have given you my thoughts and opinions of what I think about the Man of Steel movie. I will be seeing Man Of Steel sometime in the next week and actually hope it turns out well.

The day was Febuary 20th 2013 and Sony had something to annouce, but was being very coy about something they had up their sleeve. Sony invited a large group of people, mainly games journalist and tech websites to a large venue located in New York City. Many people were speculating and dropping many different hints of what could happen at this event, but the overall feeling was that Sony would drop the ultimate secret, the Sony PlayStation 4. The event started and it was quickly realized that the PS4 was what this event was going to be all about.
“PlayStation 4 uses an eight-core x86 processor, 8 GB of RAM and a GPU similar to Those Typically found in PCs. While Sony did not go into great detail about the components, we do Know That Will Be the console based around an AMD processor Jaguar.” (Pionneau)
What makes this information so important to you and me? Well in the large scheme of life it actually doesn’t matter that much, but in the tech world this large deal of information made so many people happy. The internal parts of the PS4 have allowed the future of gaming to go in so many different directions that no other gaming consoles have gone before. During the announcement of the PS4, Sony spent a large amount of time explaining that the PS4 will allow developers a newer and easier way to make games for this system. Due to the fact the processors that are in the main core of the system are similar to a PC. The reason this is important and sparked my interest is because most games or other software almost 100% of the time begins its life on a computer before ever coming to Xbox or PlayStation. This means developers will feel more comfortable with PS4 and in turn we will see more games.
In the end, the announcement of the PS4 had many other aspects that could be highlighted, from the announcement of social interaction (YouTube) while playing PS4, to the grand reveal of the new Dual-Shock 4 controller. But I feel the number one thing to be excited about is the cadence that Sony PlayStation has set. They have gone out of their way to prove that the PlayStation brand is about one thing and one thing only, this new system has been built for “Gamers”.

With every big company there is going to be thee occasional hiccup and when you are an arm of a large company like PlayStation is to Sony, hiccups tend to happen quite frequently. But it’s not how many problems or errors you have with your company, it’s what you do to fix that problem and show your consumer that you have the situation under control. This is where Sony PlayStation has stumbled in the past couple years with the announcement of PlayStation Store getting hacked and the sad down fall of the PlayStation Move.
“Sony has warned PS3 owners with PlayStation Network accounts that there has been “a possibility of unauthorized access to personal information on the PLAYSTATION Store through PCs, a content download service of the PLAYSTATION Network.” In other words, some folks hacked the PC PlayStation Store and may have had access to users’ account information.” (Roper)
Always being connected and having social interaction has become one of the most important things in the gaming industry. So when the PlayStation Store was hacked in 2008 PlayStation had quite a mess on their hands and really hadn’t a clue of what to do. All while the Xbox and Xbox Live flourished and began to leave PS3 in the dust.
“As we reported earlier this week, Sony revealed PlayStation Move’s sales figures at a Move-centric GDC panel. Move has shipped 10.5 million units so far, which seemed to please Sony’s Gabe Ahn during his discussion.” (Moriarty)
Now 10.5 Million units of the PlayStation Move may seem like a large number to you and me, but from how many PS3 units have been sold in the wild it comes out to be a colossal failure. With the popularity of the Nintendo Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 tried very hard to jump on the bandwagon with move like features with their systems, but could never meet the popularity.
In the end, PlayStation over the past couple of years has had some failures that have made the company look at what they do in many different lights. So much so, that they have made some extremely large strides in their online services and move integration. Sony PlayStation as implemented services such as PlayStation Plus where users pay a one-time fee or monthly subscription to gain access to some of the most popular games and movies at a discount. And as for the PlayStation Move the company has listened to its hardcore fan base and started to focus on just gameplay experiences that use the Dual-Shock controller, but still gives the second option to use the Move. Sony PlayStation is an intelligent company and will continue to have issues, but from the looks of it can always seem to find nice solutions to their problems.

Roper, Chris. “PlayStation Networked Hacked.” IGN Entertainment . 28 3 2008: n. page. Print. <http://www.ign.com/articles/2008/03/28/playstation-networked-hacked>.
The PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Portable PlayStation Player (PSP) and lastly the PlayStation Vita (Vita), these are all of the products that SCE have created since the birth of the PlayStation brand in 1994. To date, one of the greatest selling gaming systems of all time is the PlayStation 2 which was released in November of 2000 and has sold over 50 million units.
“Long before there was such a thing as affordable CD-ROM gaming or 3D polygonal graphics, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) set the not-too-humble goal of creating a gaming platform that would become as pervasive as the VCR and change the industry forever.” (Sony PlayStation)
In 2006, Sony felt it was time to unveil their newest system the PlayStation 3. But to many peoples surprise the console came out of the gates stumbling. Many people had already made the switch to the Xbox 360 which had come out one year earlier and also the price point of the PS3 scared a large number of people away. With the PS3 being sold at an absurd price point of 599 U.S dollars, a large number of the PlayStations loyal fan base had begun to jump ship. Sony might have stumbled a little from the start of this generation, but as of this last year the PlayStation 3 has made a strong comeback and has surpassed Xbox 360 in global sells.
Sony finds itself in a great position as of February 20th 2013. They have announced the PS4 and an array of new games, which is rumored to be released in the fall of 2013. Why are they in such a great position? I feel they are in the best position in years because they have publicly come out and made it known that the PlayStation Brand is about one thing and one thing only Gamers. They have also captured a large majority of the mind-share in the gaming world by announcing their new console, before Microsoft has had a chance to counter with the rumored Xbox 720. It’s going to be an interesting and exciting to see what other tricks Sony has to unveil in the next couple of years.
